LOCAL GOVERNMENT GROUP FOR EUROPE (LGE)
The Local Government Group for Europe dates back to the early 1950s when a group of councillors and officers in British local government form the Individual Members’ Group of the British Section of the Council of European Municipalities.
The IMG was the vehicle by which British local government first became involved in Europe at local government and regional level and led to a rapid growth of British influence in European and International local government.
This growing activity culminated in the formation of the highly regarded Local Government International Bureau in the 1980s and the Individual Members’s Group became affiliated to LGIB through its Assembly.
In 1997, on the formation of the Local Government Association, the IMG decided to establish itself as an independent voluntary association under the title Local Government Group for Europe.
LGE is a non-party political organisation and its membership comprises individual councillors and officers, past and currently serving, together with other people with an interest in local government.
The Group’s objectives are:
- to advance the cause of local democracy as defined in the European Charter of Local Self-Government;
- to support the further development of the European Union based upon the principles of democracy, subsidiarity and respect for diversity;
- to provide a forum for debating European issues with particular relevance to local government;
- to co-operate with other bodies, notably those representing UK local government and those representing UK interests in Europe, in activities and campaigns to enhance local democracy in the European context.
